Changes Coming To Podcaster Training

Posted on 21 April 2009 by Dr. Robert White

[ad#twobeams]
It’s been a while since I have made some drastic changes to the format at Podcaster Training and beginning with this week’s episode, I will be changing a few things. I know change can be frightening to some and welcome to others, however, I’m gonna do it anyway! :)

First, I am going to put uStream.TV on hold for a while. I will still do video, but I will be using Mogulus for a while as it is most likely the most stable of all of the networks running right now. I will be changing the template at http://www.newmediapro.tv, my live page site, to reflect this change. Mogulus also has a chat room, but is not solely dependent on using it, like what uStream does. Also, with Mogulus, I will have a 24 hour station running and will be able to more easily incorporate videos into my training sessions. This change will be the most drastic of all, I assure you!

Next, I will be changing the format around and will make the training more interactive. So, look for me to call on those of you that phone in, more than I have in the past. I also want to encourage others to phone in and get involved as well. This new format will allow me to do “immediate” training during the show, such as answering questions and providing additional training that is not part of the session for that night. Also, this new format will allow new and prospective hosts to call in and get some “one on one” hand holding with special consideration to Talkshoe.

Lastly, I will be incorporating more Talkshoe related training back into the format once again. Since I am a Support Rep for Talkshoe, this seems like a good time to bring back this style of training.

I will be changing around some of how I present the show as well. You’ll be able to find out more come Friday Night!

Podcaster Training: The Angst and Awe of Podcasting

Posted on 14 March 2009 by Dr. Robert White

[ad#skype]
I want to thank Bruce Turner for filling in for me on Podcaster Training. Even though I could only be on the phone, it sounded like he had a great turnout and I also want to thank the listeners that participated during the show.

Bruce talked about the angst and awe of podcasting as his main topic. Be sure to listen to this great episode in the player below and join us every Friday Night for more Podcaster Training!

We will return with our regular episodes next Friday and our main topic will be on “Casting Your Net For Listeners”.

Special Episode of Podcaster Training Friday Night

Posted on 10 March 2009 by Dr. Robert White

[ad#skype]
Ok, what’s so special about THIS episode? Isn’t Podcaster Training on EVERY Friday Night? The answer is simple, this episode will be special because it will be Guest Hosted by Bruce Turner!

I will be unavailable (my day job is getting in the way again), however, the show MUST go on! Bruce has been a long time, regular on Podcaster Training and is a fellow host on Talkshoe. He will most likely be doing an Open Mic style show, but then again, that’s entirely up to him! Tune in and see what is happening on Friday Night.

Oh, and if I can manage it, I will try and stop in for a few minutes, if my schedule permits it. I’ll be definitely checking out the podcast to hear all the fun I missed! And, I will be back the following Friday Night with more Podcaster Training.

Have fun on Friday Night, 8:00pm EST at http://www.talkshoe.com/tc/16829

How would you do this?

Posted on 11 January 2009 by Dr. Robert White

[ad#twobeams]
Here’s the scenario:
You have a blog, a podcast and a live video stream, all produced by you and you have three separate audiences, one audience for each medium. You want to get your blog readers to come to your podcast, you also want your podcast listeners to come to your live video stream, and likewise, you want your listeners and live viewers to come to your blog.

How would you make this happen?

Why am I asking this, you might inquire? I have been asked to do a series on Podcaster Training pertaining to just that scenario I outlined above. With more and more people getting into New Media in different ways, getting traffic to your blog, podcast and live video stream is getting more difficult as these are all perceived as being separate, but equal functions. However, the New Media Producer doesn’t see it that way and they want to combine their audiences and get them involved into the various aspects of what they are producing.

I have began to write this series and then I got to thinking that I could use some different input as most of the listeners of my show have proven to be a great source for ideas like this. Also proving that “two heads are better than one” thus making for a more informed decision.

I would like everyone that wants to give their input, to do so in the comments section here. I will then take these comments and add them to the training. And don’t worry, there will be credit given to the people that contribute to this! Also, for contributing, I will give you a special gift, but I’m not going to say what just yet until I start seeing the results! Just another incentive, I guess, to give me your thoughts!

I would like to start this series within the next few weeks, but won’t start until I have all the input I need from everyone. Please take a minute to give me your thoughts! Thanks in advance!

2008: The Year In Review

Posted on 28 December 2008 by Dr. Robert White

[ad#camstudioim]
2008 is coming to an end. As we prepare to begin another new year, I thought I’d take a few minutes and look back at this past year and what has went on at The NMP Network during 2008.

The year started as most do, we had a mild winter in Indiana and thanks to that, I was able to be around the studio more during this winter than I am most of the time.

Just two months prior, in November 2007, we changed the format and name of our Friday Night Show from So You Want To Host Your Own Talkcast to Podcaster Training from Two Beams. The format changed from a Co-Hosted Show to a Segmented Show, offering more than just straight out training from the hosts. In February 2008, Tommy Vallier, my Co-Host from the beginning, left the show to pursue other interests. I looked around for another Co-Host, however, decided on adding Segment Hosts instead.

I brought on Jeff Chandler from the WordPress Weekly show to do a segment on WordPress each week and then Josh Budde followed along a short time later with his segment outlining changes at Talkshoe and his podcasts.

Patti Serrano and myself had been hosting a show called Business 101 on Monday Nights and when Patti needed to free up her Monday Nights for other business, we moved Business 101 to Friday Nights as a Segment on the Podcaster Training show and renamed it The Business of Podcasting.

In March 2008, I shortened the name from Podcaster Training from Two Beams to simply Podcaster Training. I also ceased using the domain http://www.twobeams.com for the show and dedicated http://www.podcastertraining.com as the shows new web site. I restructured the blog at http://www.nmpnetwork.com as the new portal for all the shows I currently produce as well as past shows that are no longer in production. The shorter name became the brand for yet another format change to the show.

I was approached by Jeff Chandler one evening about becoming a Co-Host on the show. We discussed it and he had several great ideas, most of which are still implemented today. Jeff co-hosted the show for about two months at which time he re-started WordPress Weekly again and took it out of hiatus. Because his new show was at the same time on Friday Nights as Podcaster Training, he decided to leave his co-hosting position and send in a pre-recorded segment each week. I was happy to see him restart WordPress Weekly and have supported him in his transition. He continues to send in his segments every week and they are a welcome part of the show!

In August 2008, I decided to leave Talkshoe and go to a straight video format. Talkshoe was having some severe technical issues with their audio, or at least on my shows, at the time. Something in the VOIP setup on their end was making for some terrible feedback and echoing for the listeners, making my shows unbearable to listen to. I left, reluctantly, and began a journey to different video streaming services only to be met with different type of issues, mainly the services being too unstable for an hour long show like mine.

Near the end of September 2008, I returned to Talkshoe, after confirming that the audio issues I was experiencing when I left, had been addressed. It appeared they had been addressed, so I came back and started back on an audio only platform with Talkshoe again. Even though there are still some little issues here and there, they haven’t been severe enough to prevent my shows from being produced and listened to.

Since my return to Talkshoe in September, my number of listeners have been growing. Thanks to this growth is in part of bringing on another Segment Host, Michelle Trent, who joined us in November 2008 and does a segment on Social Media News and Twitter. Michelle has several follow her to the show each week and we are happy that she was able to join us with her segment.

Well, that pretty much brings us up to date. The NMP Network added a few new sites over 2008 including a new Membership Site for PLR and MRR products using the http://www.twobeams.com domain. We also revamped the http://www.podcastertraining.com site to add more training for site visitors. Lastly, for those who want the more personal approach to training, http://www.learntopodcast.com was added to give just that!

That wraps up 2008: A Year In Review. We are looking forward to a great 2009 and hope you are too! Happy New Year Everyone from The NMP Network!

Podcaster Training: The Phases of Podcasting – Phase 1 The Basics Cont’d

Posted on 08 November 2008 by Dr. Robert White

[ad#gotomypc]
Last week, we started discussing a new series called The Phases of Podcasting. To recap, in Phase 1: The Basics of Podcasting, we talked a bit about the history of podcasting and how to begin recording a podcast using Audacity. Now, keep in mind, that a lot of this phase really requires a hands on approach, so if you are interested in doing this and need further instruction, please contact me and let me know how I can help you.

Today, we continue with more on Phase 1: The Basics of Podcasting. We will begin by taking the recorded audio in Audacity and we will do some basic editing. I will do my best to describe how to do this, as again, this is more a hands on type of training and cannot be handled very well with words, but we will do our best to get through this!

To start, fire up Audacity on your PC and record your podcast audio. We covered this last week, however, to recap that a little, click on the red button on the toolbar to begin your recording. Once completed, click the yellow square button to stop the recording. Now, listen to your audio all the way through and while doing so, take notes where you need to edit out ums and dead space or stuttering, etc. and then once you have listened all the way through, you are now ready to begin the editing process.

Run your audio to a point on your timeline to where you need to cut out some dead space or an um or whatever. Stop your playback just before that area you want to cut out and click on the Selection Tool (looks like a capital I) and then left click and drag across the area and only the area, you want to cut out. Once you have completed your selection, release the left click button and you should have a small portion of your timeline highlighted. Let me caution you right here. SAVE FIRST BEFORE EDITING! This is very important. If you edit an unsaved audio file and then you will not have a way to go back if you accidentally remove something you didn’t want to cut out.

Next, once the highlighting is done, click on the scissors on the toolbar and your highlighted section will disappear. You have now, cut out a small section and can playback that area to hear your results. If you are satisfied, you can move on to the next section until your editing is completed.

I will not cover how to add in new audio or import say like music and the like in this section. This can all be handled through the audio process as well and there are plenty of YouTube videos covering Audacity that will walk you though these steps.

After the editing is completed, you are now ready to export your audio to an MP3. To do this, you will need to have the Lame MP3 Encoder installed in Audacity. This too, is a free download. You will find the link on the Audacity download page.

To export to an MP3, click on File and then Export and choose MP3. You will be prompted for a filename, give it one that will describe your podcast and then the ID3 tag window will open to allow you to edit and change the ID3 tags for your MP3.

To learn more about using Audacity, there is a great online tutorial you can follow produced by Jason Van Orden. You can find the tutorial here.

Moving forward, after you have your recorded podcast ready to upload, you then need a podcast host. There are lots of hosts out there such as Libsyn and Podomatic, however, you are limited to a small storage area unless you pay a monthly charge for more space. Also, some hosts will charge you for bandwidth usage as well, so you need to check that out before choosing a host.

For those of you that podcast on Talkshoe, you get the best of all worlds because Talkshoe offers free unlimited storage and no bandwidth costs and you can easily upload a pre-recorded podcast anytime you like and it will be available virtually right away for consumption.

So there you have it. Some basic history of podcasting and a little insight on how to record a podcast using Audacity. Now, let’s look at some more basics that might interest you!

For the novice or beginner podcaster, this can be a scary or frightening hobby as many people don’t like how they sound on a recording. However, once you get over your “stage fright” then you can actually start enjoying the benefits that podcasting has to offer.

For the novice or beginner podcaster, here are some things that you should have to get yourself ready to start podcasting.

First, and foremost, a topic. Without a topic, it will be difficult at best to have good content, unless you are planning a podcast that will involve listeners and make it an “open mic” affair. In any event, you should have a topic and it should be something that you are either an expert on or at least have some knowledge about.

Take this show, for example. When I started Podcaster Training, it was called So You Want To Host Your Own Talkcast? At the time, Talkshoe was young and had little to no support, with the exception of Tommy Vallier, as many of you are already familiar with. I was hosting about 6 other shows at the time and was getting questions about Talkshoe on most of these shows, like “How did you get your audio to work over VOIP?” or “How can I use Gizmo to call into Talkshoe for free?” and I would answer these questions, as I already knew how to do this, so that part was easy. After fielding these questions almost daily, I approached Dave Nelson, the CEO of Talkshoe and asked him if he would object if I hosted a show supporting Talkshoe. He readily agreed and so on with the show! I now had a topic and had some of the knowledge necessary to host the show with. Tommy Vallier came in on the very first episode and offered to come onto the show weekly and answer questions and he eventually joined the show as my Co-Host until his departure from Talkshoe.

So having a topic is key, especially a topic you are familiar with. Next, you need to have a “working title” for your podcast. A working title is a title that best describes what your podcast is about, in as few of words as possible. Take this show again, my first working title said it all! So You Want To Host Your Own Talkcast? In those days, the live shows were called Talkcasts, now they are Community Calls. No matter, my title still said it all. When I changed formats, I chose Podcaster Training, again, the title says it all.

After you have your topic and working title, you should setup a blog using WordPress.com or Blogspot, your choice, and then get an appropriate domain name that points to your blog. Dot Com domain names are cheap by today’s pricing standards. Depending on your topic and genre of your podcast, you may want to opt for a Dot ME or DOT Org or even a Dot Info domain name. Again, your choice.

If you are pre-recording your podcasts, setup an account with a podcast host or setup an account with Talkshoe and now you have the basics for a great podcast.

Remember, you may think that it’s all been said already. Don’t be fooled for a second. What you have to say is just as important, if not more so, than what’s already been said. And, you may even say something that no one has heard before!

In the coming weeks, I will cover more on promoting and monetizing your podcasts. Next week, we will move on to Phase 2: Prepping for your podcast. We will discuss what happens before the record button is hit to insure you have everything ready for a great podcast!
