Bandaids and Workarounds – Why Do We Use Them?

Posted by Dr. Robert White On February - 23 - 2010

In this episode of Talkshoe Support LIVE!, we discussed why we use bandaids and workarounds to “fix” issues with some of our features. Even though applying a bandaid to a cut or bruise does not actually heal the boo-boo, it does aid in the healing process allowing the person to continue about their daily routine.

When a technological feature needs fixing, that can sometimes mean several days, months or even years before an actual fix can be presented. So, applying a bandaid will not “fix” the issue, it will allow the user to continue using the product or feature until an actual fix can be presented.

We talked about a number of bandaids and workarounds that are used today, so listen to this great episode in the player below to get your “fix” to why we use, what we use, when we use it!

Web Client Browser Tests Performed LIVE!

Posted by Dr. Robert White On February - 17 - 2010

In my last post, I told you about a live browser test for the Talkshoe Web Client, and so here are the results from that live test!

On February 8th, 2010, during the live episode of Talkshoe Support LIVE!, Josh, Logan and myself used our Training Room to demonstrate using the Web Client in four different browser settings. There was no magic involved or trickery of any sort and we performed these tests in front of 15 or more viewers that joined us in the live Training Room. Here are the specs for the tests:

A Windows 7 PC with all current updates
Firefox 3.6
Google Chrome 4.0.249.89
Safari 4.0.4
Internet Explorer 8.0

We conducted the tests multiple times with each browser to login as a Guest and to login as a Talkshoe User. Some of the viewers watching these tests also performed their own tests while they watched and reported back their findings, live to the group, while we were on the air. We also conducted each of these test using live shows (that were live at the time) and not a private setting or unlisted show and each of the shows used were randomly selected during the tests.

The audio from these tests were recorded and you can hear the recording in the player below. We are posting additional videos as part of these tests at http://www.talkshoesupport.com for you to be able to witness these findings yourself.

After completing these tests, we discovered that in most cases, especially with Google Chrome and Safari browsers, that you really must be logged in as a Talkshoe User. Logging in as a Guest, prevented some or all of the features of the chat room to appear or function properly.

The bottom line of our testing revealed that the Talkshoe Web Client will work with most of today’s popular browsers. There are several thousand users on the Talkshoe System that use the Web Client, sometimes daily, and without any issues at all. There are others that have nothing but problems using the Web Client. Due to the fact that there are so many configurations and variables to computers, software and browsers today, it is almost impossible to insure that the Web Client will work on each and every computer that uses it. For those who are unable to get the Web Client to function or work properly, we have the Talkshoe Live Pro Client available for a free download and it is also free to use.

Over the next couple of weeks, we will try to have the rest of the test videos in place to complete the series (4 videos in all) so that you will have a side by side comparison to see for yourself. Each video will be less than 10 minutes in length and will focus on one browser and randomly selected live shows that are live while the video is being produced.

If you have any questions about these browser tests or would like more information about how we conducted these tests, please feel free to contact us or come on to our Monday Night Show at 7:00pm EST at http://www.talkshoe.com/tc/875
