The Setting Captures The Reader’s Attention

Posted on 19 February 2009 by Marcella Glenn

Setting is the home, place, or
universe where your story
takes places. It’s a character
in the work of fiction.

The setting tells the reader
where the story takes place.
It opens the character’s world,
problem.

“What do you mean?” You
asked.

The setting centers on a
haunted house in my novel, Grave
Street House.

Take a look at an excerpt from
it.

When I walked onto my street
heads bobbed and turned. They
knew the horror awaiting him. A
few drifted into their places of
security as the homeless intruder
wobbled into the House. They
reacted with warnings to stay out.
Only, he ignored them. He slowed
down, whirled his head toward me
with fear in his eyes.

I motioned, with my hand, for him
to come back.

I rushed closer to the House,
forced my way through the mob
of people.

Perspiration beads formed on my
forehead. I strained to take in
enough oxygen. I stopped
moving. Fear had me in its
grip.

He continued to sway-up the worn-
out steps, made a mockery of the
condemned, haunted, Grave Street
House.

My setting exposes scary, dark,
mystery. The reader expects
certain occurrences, looks for
them.

My setting opens a door to a
house where strange events
happen. On page one, my setting
is displayed. It’s mixed in the story.

The setting should be
involved on page one, and
throughout the story.

“Is there a fixed number of
times to use a setting?”
Someone asked.

No. My setting, the haunted
house, is front and center
numerous times. New
characters face Grave Street
House, and that hic-cups new
suspense.

The setting isn’t boring to
read, because new
circumstances bring more
twists, turns.

The best settings are written
about places you know. Research
a setting to get to know an era
better. Visit a place, take notes,
and create a setting.

You have to know a setting to
write about it in a fun, exciting,
scary, or loving way.

The setting is a character
in-waiting. It’s silent until
stirred into the plot, drama.
