Credit Cards. Be Warned

Posted on 24 January 2009 by Dr. Robert White

[ad#lifelock]
credit-card
Does the credit card work for you or do you work for your credit card Most people’s answer to that question will depend on how they treat their “old plastic” as credit cards are known.

For many with burned fingers will tell you they didn’t realize that things had gotten so bad until very late, because most credit card offers try much to sound like they are actually running a charity. Well, they aren’t.

And this is not a hate campaign against credit cards.

Surely they have their benefits – in America if you want to rent a car, you got to have a (major) credit card.

But, consider this scenario:

You receive an offer in your mail that sounds good, maybe it’s a new generation TV or a fridge. But it costs $2000. Oh, but you have a credit card with a $5000 limit, and you immediately purchase your merchandise. Typically, here is how your repayment schedule will play out. Most credit cards charge a minimum of total balance (usually 2 percent) of the total per month. Assuming the interest rate is 18 percent and you choose to repay the minimum amount of $40, $30 of that will go towards interest and only 10 percent towards the principle. As a result, you will take 30 years to repay and end up paying over $5000 interest.

Sounds scary It doesn’t have to be. The moral of the illustration is:

Use the credit card the same way porcupines make love; very, very carefully.

Types Of Credit cards

Posted on 24 January 2009 by Dr. Robert White

[ad#trustedid]
credit-card
Credit cards are ubiquitous in our lives.

There are three main types of credit cards that are common in America. They are travel and entertainment cards such as American Express or Diners Card. These have to be paid in full at the end of the month and are liberal on spending limits.

The second major cards are the bank cards such as Master Cards, Visa, GM, and Ford cards sponsored mainly by the banks. The bank defines spending limits, which in the bank parlance, is known as the credit lines, and each offers different terms and conditions. Banks offer a choice of payment methods, either pay the balance in full with no interest or pay a minimum part or some part of the balance with a finance charge.

The other major type of card is the retail store cards such as Sears, J.C. Penney, Shell or Mobil. These cards, known in some countries (the ones from gas companies) as fuel cards are only accepted in specific countries and usually do not have annual fees. There is a wide disparity in the terms and conditions for the cards.

Different types of credit cards offer several different options, depending on what your needs are. Some are geared toward individual consumers, while others are set up in ways that work best for small business needs. To know what type of credit card fits your needs, you should review a few of your options.

Should You Join a Social Networking Website?

Posted on 24 January 2009 by Dr. Robert White

[ad#skype]

Are you interested in meeting new people online? If so, there is a good chance that you have heard of social networking websites before. Social networking websites are, in a way, like a community. They allow internet users to connect with and communicate with each other. Despite the fact that social networking website have rapidly increased in popularity and their popularity is only expected to keep on rising, there are many internet users who are unsure as to whether or not social networking websites are for them.

If you are interested in determining whether or not you should join an online networking website, you are encouraged to think about why those websites are so popular. Doing so will enable you to determine why other internet users make the decision to join an online social network. After that close examination, you may even find that those are the same reasons why you should or want to join. One of those reasons is the ability to easily meet other internet uses.

Before social networking websites, it was difficult to meet other internet users. If you tried, you would have to rely on chat rooms or instant messaging services. As nice as these popular internet features are, they are not always considered safe. With chat rooms or instant messaging programs you were often given little reassurance that a person was who they claimed to be. Without profiles, there was no way that you could learn more about a particular internet user, even if you wanted to. Social networking websites have changed that.

Not only have social networking websites made it safer to meet people online, it also allows you to meet people that have the same or similar interests as yourself. Most social networking websites allow you to create your own profile; in fact, many even give you your own webpage. These profiles or pages will allow you to share information on yourself, including your likes and dislikes. Since all other network members should have the same pages and profiles, it should be fairly easy for you to meet up with other internet users, especially those who enjoy or believe in the same things that you do.

Another one of the many reasons why you should join a social networking website is because you literally have a wide variety of different choices. As social networking websites increased in popularity, so did the number of websites that could be found online. Although MySpace is often deemed the most popular online social networking website, there are others that are just as easy or as much fun to use. You should easily be able to find those websites by performing a standard internet search.

In your search, for social networking websites, you will come across a number of different networks. Many of those sites will have a particular focus. Unlike MySpace, which accepts just about any internet user, there are online networks that aim to accept internet users that have a particular hobby, view, or belief. Online, it is not uncommon to find social networking websites that focus on politics, religion, pets, sports, and more. If you are unsure about joining an online networking community, specialty networking sites may be your best bet. They are a great way to test the waters and they are nice because they automatically pair you with internet users who have the same interests, views, or beliefs as you do.

Perhaps, the greatest reasons why should join a social networking website is because most are free to use. Popular free networks include Yahoo! 360, Orkut, and MySpace. In addition to free social networks, there are online networks in which you are required to pay to join. Although you may not want to pay for something that you can obtain for free elsewhere, you will find that most paid networks offer you more membership benefits, when compared to free social networking sites.

Due to the fact that most social networking websites are free to use or at least free to try, you are encouraged to give them a shot. If you are unsatisfied with what you see, you can easily cancel your membership, often at anytime.

Critique Your Writing Professionally

Posted on 24 January 2009 by Marcella Glenn

typewriter1
Non-fiction and fiction demands to be critiqued. Of course, this eliminates those who get it perfect on draft one. Some never have the task of critiquing their work, for the sixth time.

Most of us must strengthen our editing abilities.

“How do you edit?” You coughed.

Read through your article, essay, poem, chapter, or term paper once. Put it down.

Take a walk. Read the book you meant to last year. Clean off your desk, start an exercise program, or telephone someone you’ve wanted to.

On day two, read it out-loud. You’re checking for mis-statements, typos, omissions, syntax errors, grammatical slip-ups, and weak writing. Is the correct phrases situated in your writing? Take notice of run-on sentences. Form every sentence according to standard.

Reading out-loud allows you to hear words. Say them slowly. Did the sentence(s) sound right? If not, find out why. Determine if the subject and verb match.

“I stand to get a better look at who screamed, but it was a prank.”

In order for the subject and verb to agree, stand should be changed to stood.

Are there too many adjectives? Use strong verbs where possible. Did you use the wrong word?

“What do you mean?” You sighed.

I’m referring to typing a word you didn’t mean to. You typed bear instead of bare, for example. It isn’t hard to tap out hear when here is the intended word.

Walk through the editing process slowly. It’s better to do a good job when you critique than get a rejection.

Write as if you’re talking to an acquaintance, friend, in non-fiction.
Provide easy to understand words, and be direct.

Sometimes, a question comes to mind when non-fiction or fiction is
read So, anticipate questions, and answer them.

Fiction yearns for an exciting plot. Plot is the steps taken to solve a
problem.

Characters grab, hold, the reader’s attention. Often, readers escape
into the world you created, because it’s written well. Many times, people identify with a character, dislike a character’s best friend, know a person similar to the villain, and/or something in the story makes him/her angry, happy.

The critiquing of any piece of writing is complete when every word has been checked.

The editing process is more challenging than the writing.

Spend time on dialogue. It mirrors speech. It’s an imitation.

Let’s look at examples.

How many people say?

“Who is going with us?”

They’d utter.

“Whose goin’ with?” or “Whose goin’ with us?”

What is most likely to be said?

“I have been around.” or “I’ve been ’round.”

I’d use the second sentence.

There are books on writing dialogue, but I learned, more,
by listening to people talk.

Editing is a segment, part, of writing. The act of editing will make you better at the craft.

Listener Poll: If Podcaster Training were to become a premium service…

Posted on 24 January 2009 by Dr. Robert White

[ad#rssannouncer]
podcastertraining40
This is a listener poll for Podcaster Training.

The question:
If Podcaster Training were to become a Premium Service, how much would you pay each month to participate in this service?

Here’s the scenario:
Podcaster Training would still be free on Friday Nights. There would be a premium service for members only that would get a higher quality podcast, live and recorded, audio and video, with more direct, hands on training. A wider number of subjects would be covered in the premium service and the membership would be held for a select few (under 20) members at any one time to allow for more one on one training and coaching.

Please leave your comments to this post along with your thoughts on this listener poll and let me know your position on this!

Modeling a business after another one is not illegal. Using a business name or trademark that is registered is.
Mark_Strickland2009-01-24 – 02:26:57 GMT
Right Kenneth, copying a business can almost be flattering
Kenneth Barrow2009-01-24 – 02:28:13 GMT
I had people stealing my photos I was glad to see it because it gave me the impression that they thought them valuable enough to steal.

Mark_Strickland2009-01-24 – 02:40:35 GMT

WordPress Report For The Week Of January 22nd 2009

Posted on 24 January 2009 by Jeffro

wordpress-logo-cristal_thumbnail
WordPress MU 2.7 Beta Released – Donncha the lead developer of WordPress MU announced today the release of WordPress MU 2.7 beta. The announcement states that this version is pretty stable but it’s not the final version which will be released to the public as it still needs some testing. – http://ocaoimh.ie/2009/01/22/wordpress-mu-27-beta/

Visual Coverage Of WordPress – On January 16th a new community oriented blog headed up by Automattic employee Michael Pick opened to the public. The site is called WordPress.tv with the goal of providing up-to-date WordPress themed content. This could be WordCamp videos, plugin reviews, tutorials. Right now, the site boasts quite a bit of visual content from recent wordcamp events as well as WordPress.com material. However, the site plans on featuring user created videos within the near future. – http://blog.wordpress.tv/2009/01/16/welcome-to-wordpresstv/

The WordPress Handbook – During the recent WordCamp Las Vegas event, Matt Mullenweg announced something he calls the WordPress Handbook documentation project. This project will be a free online manual for WordPress users that will contain updated information. Right now, the details of the project state that the online manual will be versioned, edited, and compiled much like the way development for the WordPress project takes place. – http://lorelle.wordpress.com/2009/01/20/wordpress-handbook-project/

Plugin Of The Week – WP Greet Box – This plugin lets you show a different greeting message to your new visitors depending on their referrer URL.
For example, when a Digg user clicks through from Digg, they will see a message reminding them to digg your post if they like it. Another example, when a visitor clicks through from Twitter, they will see a message suggesting them to twit the post and follow you on Twitter. You can also set a default greeting message for new visitors (not matching any referrer URLs) suggesting them to subscribe to your RSS feed. – http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-greet-box/

Podcaster Training: Bridging the Gap Between Mediums – Part 1

Welcome to our new series called “Bridging the Gap Between Mediums”. There are three distinct, but separate mediums in the New Media World, Blogs, Podcasting and Video Streaming. Our new series will attempt to cover what it takes to bridge the gaps between these three mediums and get your audiences from the individual mediums to cross over and check out other projects you are producing.

Tonight, we will begin with blogging. The first known blog was used by The Charlotte Observer, chronicling Hurricane Bonnie in August 1998. Since that time, many blogs have sprung up ranging from personal blogs to corporate blogs and everything in between. As of December 2007, Technorati was showing more than 112 million blogs that they were tracking. That number is even greater today.

So, more to the point, when you have a blog, you have a built in audience that will subscribe and visit your blog site and will read your posts. This is great, only if you only have a blog and nothing else! But, what if you also have a podcast that you are producing, what then?

Just like your blog, you have a built in audience that will subscribe and listen to your podcasts. Are these the same people that read your blog? Most likely, no. Maybe a few will have already crossed over and are checking both, however, in general, you have two separate audiences that you are catering to. Thus the question arises, how do I get my blog readers to listen to my podcasts? Let’s look at some ways that you might be able to make this happen.

First, think about this. You already have a blog, so why not post your show notes and comments to your blog that come from your podcast? In this way, your blog audience will read your post and if you include a player in the post, they can easily listen to that one episode that is attached to your post. In this way, if you generate interest in your blog post about your podcast, they will click on the player and listen to the podcast. If they like what they hear, you may have just picked up a new listener!

So, how do you generate interest to get your blog reader to listen to your podcast? Think about public speaking for a second. For a person that has to deliver a speech or perform a public speaking event and the like, the speaker will need to do three things to insure that they can reach their audience. First, they need to start their speech with an interesting statement. Their first 20 to 30 words will help them to grasp the audience’s attention. Next, they will want to present a need. “Talk” to the audience and tell them something that they will need to listen to the speaker in order to gain something they want or need from this speech. And third, build a bridge to allow the audience to “come to them” to get this information or knowledge of which they are seeking.

With these three steps, the public speaker will be able to take ahold of the audience and hold their attention for 30 to 40 minutes and allow the audience to gain from this experience and even want more!

Let’s relate this to your blog and podcast. When writing your blog post about your podcast, have an interesting title. Something that will immediately grab the readers attention. Next, within your first paragraph, include an interesting statement that will continue to hold the attention of the reader and make them want to read further. Then, go into your blog post and about 1/3rd of the way through, again, drop in another interesting statement about what you are talking about. This will continue to hold the attention of the reader. By the end of your post, in your last paragraph, one last interesting statement and a call to action to allow them to click on the play button or to go to your podcast host site to listen to your podcasts. This last paragraph will build that bridge to allow your blog reader to come over and listen to your podcast. Your call to action should light a signal fire to your reader indicating the route that you want them to follow to get where you are taking them.

By doing this, you will be able to lead your blog reader to your podcast and hopefully get them to listen to your podcast. From here, the rest is up to you! You will need to have an interesting podcast or else they might only listen once and not come back. When bringing your blog readers to your podcast, make sure that they are interested in what you are talking about, so try not to have a blog about one subject and a podcast about a totally different subject and try to get someone that is not interested to listen to a podcast of which they have no interest. It’s best if your audiences of your separate mediums are enjoying the niches that you are in.
