Podcaster Training: Guest Speaker Jason Van Orden

Posted on 19 September 2008 by Dr. Robert White

[ad#gotomypc]

In this special episode of Podcaster Training, our Guest Speaker, Jason Van Orden, talked about his book, Promoting Your Podcast and also about his new series called Community Magnet.

Since we had a guest speaker, our format changed a little tonight to accommodate this. I don’t think the listeners minded at all since Jason had a lot to contribute to our main topic tonight, Building Your Audience.

Since Jeff has announced that he will be leaving the show to restart WordPress Weekly again, I will be incorporating some new changes and additions to the show. I sent out a post earlier in the week about these changes and additions, so be sure to check that out.

I announced a new weekly challenge tonight. Jeff does this on his Perfcast show and I really liked the idea, so with his permission, I’m doing it now! The challenge for this week is to post a comment to this post, include your name and e-mail address (since I run an open commenting section) and tell us what you liked most about Jason’s discussion he had tonight. A winner will be chosen at random and will win a free copy of the RSS Announcer Software (valued at $97.00 retail). I will announce the winner of this challenge next week on the show and once again issue another challenge. I think you’ll notice that these challenges will get harder as time goes on, so enjoy them while they are tame!

Next week will mark Jeff’s last night as Co-Host on Podcaster Training. Our topic will be Monetizing Your Blog or Podcast. I will also make some time for a “going away party” for Jeff on his last night. This will be incorporated into our After Show and we can have fun with it that way!

I can’t begin to tell you how much I enjoyed Jason Van Orden being back on the show again! Listen to this great episode in the player below to get the most out it!

See you next week!

Tip #87: Start building credit early – and do it well

Posted on 19 September 2008 by NMP Network Administrator

[ad#adsense]

Start building credit early – even before college starts, if you plan on taking out college loans. Ask your parents to sign over a bill that you pay on time each month. Get a credit card with a low limit and a bank account that you balance each month. Avoid opening several charge cards at once – not only will they be hard to repay, but having several new accounts when you have a short credit history will actually cause your credit rating to drop. Get a part-time job.

Each of these things can help you establish good credit, high in turn can help you get a good student loan rate. More importantly, establishing credit early will help ensure that you have a long (and good) credit history by the time you graduate from college, which will help you with all your important, large post-graduation expenses.

WordPress News For The Week Of September 19th 2008

Posted on 19 September 2008 by Jeffro

[ad#skype]

WordPress 2.7 Development Progress – A Ton of inline documentation has been added thanks to the work of Jacob Santos. – http://wpdevel.wordpress.com/2008/09/18/heaps-more-inline-documentation-from-jac/

Comments look like they will have paging support in 2.7. Work has begun on adding this support to the wp_list_comments function in WordPress. – http://wpdevel.wordpress.com/2008/09/18/hailin-got-a-start-on-adding-paging-to-t/

Volunteers are needed to help implement the theme installation and updates features into the backend of WordPress. The hookups to the API are already there, someone just needs to plug it all together. According to Ryan, much of the job can be done with a cut-and-paste of the plugin update and install code. – http://wpdevel.wordpress.com/2008/09/18/we-need-to-find-someone-to-pick-up-the-t/

Drafts now have a real timestamp while also being ordered properly in the All Posts timeline. – http://wpdevel.wordpress.com/2008/09/18/drafts-now-have-a-real-timestamp-and-are/

WordPress 2.7 Usability Survey – The WordPress team earlier this week released a public survey for anyone to participate in giving feedback on how the new administration panels should look and function. The survey also provided different areas for folks to give their feedback. As of now, the survey is closed but I did manage to give them my input. I’m personally glad to see the team give end users even more of a bigger role in terms of how things work, look and function. I hope they do more of these types of surveys in the future.

Plugin Competition Winners Announced – Weblogtoolscollection.com published the results of their awesome WordPress plugin competition and how ironic is it that a commenting plugin won first place. Here are the results.

First place belongs to WP Comment Remix by Pressography – WP Comment Remix adds a plethora of new options and features to WordPress. From Reply and Quote links for commenters, to a full upgrade to the edit comments pages in the admin panel. -http://pressography.com/plugins/wp-comment-remix/

Second place goes to Manageable WordPress plugin – A WordPress plugin that allows for inline editing of the date, title, author, categories, tags, status and more on both posts and pages without leaving the “Manage” admin sections. No need to load each post or page individually. Simply double-click anywhere in the post or page row and when you’re done, press enter. By the way, this plugin has been integrated into the core and will be part of the feature set of WordPress 2.7 – http://www.aaronharp.com/dev/wp-manageable/

Third place goes to WP Easy Uploader -WP Easy Uploader was created to make the life of WordPress bloggers easier by allowing an Administrator to add plugins, themes, and any type of file to WordPress directly from inside WordPress. You no longer have to load up an FTP client just to try out that latest plugin or to upload a text document for people to download. – http://gaarai.com/wordpress-plugins/wp-easy-uploader/
