Well, it’s another “great” start to another Podcaster Training. Technical issues insued at the beginning of the show, with uStream going down, my webcam not working correctly, and cell phone connection issues (from the remote hosts). In any event, this 4th of July special went about 45 minutes and I didn’t get a chance to show the screencast that I had planned.
Near the end of the show, my VOIP connection started to degrade, so I ended the show to allow others to go an celebrate the 4th peoperly.

Podsafe music is a term created in the podcasting community to refer to any work which, through its licensing, specifically allows the use of the work. The effective definition of “podsafe” for a given work depends entirely on the contract through which the podcaster licenses the work; there is no single podsafe license. The concept of podsafety, in its true form, greatly favors the artist and the profitability of the artist’s product, in exchange for only very limited concessions to the podcasting community. Use of podsafe music instead of more stringently licensed material allows a podcaster to continue to produce an inexpensive, legal program with little hassle. Not least important for an independent podcaster is the promise of being able to avoid the onfusing maze of licensing organizations.

Magnatune offers two types of memberships, streaming or download. The streaming membership costs 9$ per month but includes unlimited listening which is online and commercial free. Magnatunes library of music consists of thousands of songs, over 600 unique albums and fifty different two hour podcasts. Artists are paid 50% of the membership fee based on what songs you listen to.
The download membership costs twice as much at 18$ per month but gives you all you can handle access. Unlimited albums downloads, MP3s, CD quality wav files and full artwork to go along with them. The download membership also gives you the same perks as the streaming membership.
Some of the genres included with magnatune include: Ambient, classical, metal, rock, electronica and more.
Magnatune specifically grants non-commercial podcasters a waiver to use their music without paying any fee to a royalty collection agency. Magnatune can do this since they deal directly with the artists. However, if you are operating a commercial podcast, you will need to obtain a commercial podcast license.
According to Magnatune A podcast is non-commercial if you do not charge listeners to hear the podcast, there is no advertising, it was not created to promote a business, and you were not paid to create the podcast. Non commercial podcasters can download 128k versions of any of the songs for free. The free versions will contain a voice at the end of the song announcing to the listener what they just heard but this can be easily deleted from the file with software such as Audacity.
Magnatune does offer a risk free membership which gives you access to members-only features but be sure to cancel within 24 hours or you risk being charged for a months worth of access.
IODA Promonent – http://iodapromonet.com
IODA or otherwise known as INDEPENDENT ONLINE DISTRIBUTION ALLIANCE is all about independent artists/music. IODA Promonent is the distribution network for IODA. This networl consists of over 25,000 full length mp3s, promo tracks, and more.
IODA is pretty cool in that they do a great job in making sure the music is as promotable as possible. This means they have plenty of pre-cleared music for use on blogs, podcasts, internet radio stations, social networks, you name it.
In terms of using music from IODA Promonent:
In exchange for using their library of independent music, IODA Promoment asks that you include details of the track along with an online retail link in your corresponding show notes or blog. They also ask that you let them know how many people have downloaded your show with the included track with their self-reporting tool.
Membership to IODAPROMONENT is free but not immediate. In order to gain access, you must fill out an application in which you will need to include information such as your website, what you will use the music for, unique monthly visitors, website name, and other personal information. Once your application is accepted, IODA will send you an email with your promonent account giving you access to their music library.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST
PODSAFE MUSIC NETWORK- http://music.podshow.com/
The podsafe music network is filled with content that is considered podsafe. These guys have been around since 2005
Podsafe has music from your typical genres such as blues, experimental rock, alternative rock, acoustic ect. You must sign up for a free account to be able to download any of the music within their library. Signing up is free.
According to the podsafe podcaster guidelines:
When you play music that you found via Podsafe, they ask that you please make it known. In other words, in your podsafe music bit, be sure to include a short clip highlighting where you found the music. Podsafe gives users a line of text in which they can say in their podcast. At some point in the near future, Podsafe Music will have a bumper that you can play which can take the place of the spoken text.
Thats not all though. Podsafe Music also asks that you link back to the Podsafe Music Network in your show notes for those episodes which include the music.
By the way, the podsafe music network has existed since 2005 and their website logo still claims they are a beta. Just an FY moment.
